Another stirring narrative by Dreyfus. As with his other books, Dreyfus uses fiction to address deeper psychological issues, and give voice to people who don't have a strong one, or who are otherwise silenced by fear. In this case Dolores, who is married to a man, a man so self-involved, he doesn't even - or ever - realize that his grandiosity is his tragic downfall. We see Lawrence's neglect of Dolores, as well as, Dolores's confusion and doubt surrounding her marriage. We also see Lawrence plummet as a result of his own behavior - self-aggrandizing and self-defeating, contemporaneously.

I found this to be a wonderful depiction of the struggles a woman committed to her marriage, while knowing something was amiss, and not knowing how to reconcile the two, goes through. It also sheds some light on the shadowy world of small towns, the dynamics of teenagers in groups, and how easily a person can be elevated to local stardom and then just as quickly dropped on his head. If you like stories with a psychological moral woven through, I highly recommend this book. I also think this book could be helpful to anyone struggling to understand a relationship where one's needs aren't being met, or for someone trying to separate from an abusive relationship. An easy, important and entertaining read!

Gag Rule edition by Edward A Dreyfus Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Mr. Dreyfus has done it again! Like his novel "Midnight Shrink", this novel pulled me in from the first page. "Gag Rule" is a tough but very believable story. The story revolves around Lawrence, the outgoing, narcissistic, musician turned high school music teacher, and his wife, Dolores, the meek and mousy first-grade teacher. Lawrence is very controlling and Dolores allows herself to be controlled by him. As they move to a new city and start new jobs, handsome Lawrence takes over for the well loved, retired, music teacher. He doesn't know the boundaries between teacher and students and becomes a little "too friendly" with some of his female students. Lawrence brings success and notoriety to the high school by building up the band program to win the state championship. The more success Lawrence has, the more people sing his praises, the more self-centered he becomes, leaving Dolores and their two babies alone more and more. As he's spending less time with his family, he's spending more time with his female students. Until he is accused of inappropriate behavior with the girls. Through all of the troubles, Dolores stood by her husband's side. The ending of the novel was very surprising to me in many ways. Mr. Dreyfus has written an emotionally charged novel that leaves the reader feeling connected to the characters, loving some, hating others, and wondering why Dolores puts up with Lawrence. Looking forward to reading more by Mr. Dreyfus. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Lawrence and Delores Miller, appear to have the perfect life. Married, with two young girls, both are teachers – she as an elementary grade school teacher, and he as a music teacher for the high school. Adjusting to a different town as a new parent hasn’t been easy for Delores, especially as Lawrence’s career begins to rise. Known around town as the ‘Music Man’, Lawrence works long hours with his students, is rarely home and when he is, is too caught up in his own needs to be of much help around the house. When Lawrence is accused of molesting his students, Delores is shocked, and her world is turned upside down. As the trial progresses, she finds herself questioning the man she loves and the life they’ve led. Edward Dreyfus presents immaculately well-drawn characters in this emotionally charged drama. The reader is immediately sucked in to these fascinating individual’s lives, and like a car-wreck, unable to look away as the destruction unfolds. Cleverly plotted, wonderfully paced, and with just enough suspense to keep reader’s captivated, GAG RULE is a brilliant portrayal of one man’s collateral damage.

Ed Dreyfus's best book yet. I couldn't put it down...... I finished the book in one sitting! Did the main character commit the crime? Would the wife ever stand up to her husband? I've known people like this in real life so the book really hit home for me.
The book is very well written, especially since it is based on possible true stories, which have a disturbing subject matter to them.
This is an absorbing and psychologically realistic portrait of the charismatic, self-serving ways in which narcissistic men are able to charm and then abuse the people (particularly the women) in their lives. Dr. Dreyfus has depicted an insightful and all too common "partnership" between a narcissistic man with an insatiable appetite for adoration and the women who allow themselves to be used and abused to feed that appetite.
